Introduction

The school needs YOUR help now! The preschool class is in danger of losing their teeth. They do not know anything about dental health. Why should they take care of their teeth? What will happen if they do not take care of their teeth?

Principal Enamel has put you in charge. They must learn how to take care of their teeth before it is too late. It is your job as experts to show them how to do this. Please do not let them down!

The Task

You must help our preschoolers! Their teeth are very important. Your task will be to learn about good dental health. Your group will tell and show the preschool students good dental health tips, and give them a poster "showing" (remember that they cannot read!) why they should take care of their teeth.

You will be given websites to help with your research.

Good luck with this project. You MUST save their teeth!

The Process

1. First, let's think about teeth. What do we know about teeth? Write down on the cluster map what you know about teeth.

2. Now let's read about teeth. Pick one of these books (or one of your own) to read and then journal what you learned.

3. Now it is time to research about teeth.

a. Click on the tooth to learn about teeth and how to brush them.

b. Click on the mouth to print an activity sheet on teeth. Complete the sheet.

c. Click on the tooth and then watch the movie "Dudley and Gramps Brush & Floss" to learn how to brush and floss your teeth the correct way!

e. Let's practice brushing our teeth. Click on the mouth for a brushing activity.

f. Let's practice flossing our teeth. Click on the mouth for a partner activity.

i. Open "kidspiration" and complete the Good Food & Bad Food activity.

j. You may e-mail your local dentist, Dr. Carrol C. Trewet of the Atlantic Dental Center, and ask him any dental questions you have at this time.

k. Let's see what we have learned. Write down on the cluster map what you have learned about teeth and dental care.

4. As a group, you will perform an experiment to learn about teeth and bacteria. There are 3 science experts in your group: a Scientist, Lab Technician, and Scientific Reporter.

a. Each team member must choose a role to play. Click to find out what your role includes.

*Scientist

*Lab Technician

*Scientific Reporter

b. Each team member must print out a copy of the experiment.

c. Follow the directions and perform the experiment.

d. Discuss results as a class.

e. Hand in your results.

5. In your same group of three, you will now become dental experts. You will be a Brushing Expert, Flossing Expert, or Food Expert.

Each expert will decide on a way to show the preschool students how to take care of their teeth. You will practice as a group and then present as a group. You will also make a group poster "showing" how and why to brush, floss, and eat good foods. Check out the checklist to see how you can do your best job possible.
