FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES
Both male and female students are strongly encouraged to enroll in the following Family & Consumer Science courses.
Exploring Skills for Life------ Elective-----
2 credits
Grade level: 9-12
This course is a comprehensive class that will
provide students the opportunity to learn essential life skills in various
areas of the family and consumer science curriculum. It allows students to
develop skills in food and nutrition, child development and care, interior
design, textiles and clothing, family relationships, and personal responsibility.
It is designed to be a full year class but students may take 1 semester for
1 credit.
Foods 1----- Elective----- 1 credit
This course will use both laboratory (hands
on) and careful study to improve our daily food choices and skills with regard
to nutrition, safety, kitchen managment, and enjoyment of eating. Actual food
preparation will be done to give experience and measure understanding in the
various units.
Foods 2-------- Elective------ 1 credit
Grade level: 10-12
Prerequisite: B in Foods 1 and/or teacher approval
Advanced Foods class offers students further opportunity to increase
their knowledge of food preparation. Emaphasis is placed on combination foods,
meal planning and preparation, and presentation of foods, inlcuding creative
techniques. Exploration of food and food customs of other countries as well
as regional foods of the United Sates and possible experience in the food
service area with the development of class-run restaurant are included.
Fashion and Clothing------Elective------1
credit
Fashion and Clothing, the design, textile, and consumer aspects of apparel
from the core units of this course. After completion of these units, students
may select one of two options for the completion of the course. The first
option would include learning about the apparel industry and the types of
careers available. The second option would include construction experience.
Child Development------Elective-----1 credit
Students are given the opportunity for hands on experience with children as
they gain understanding of children from studying their development. Students
will be responsible for planning and conducting a play school for small children
in the community. This experience as well as the study of the growth and development
of the child from conception to age six will form a foundation for being a
responsible caregiver for children as a teacher, parent, or childcare worker.
Interior Design------Elective------1 credit
Students will become familiar with the use of elements and principles of art
in the selection and design of interiors in the home. The design of the home
as an attractive and functional place will be included.
Married and Single Life Skills*-------Elective------1
credit
This course includes units in developing personality and living skills,
sexuality, adult roles and living styles, mate selection, marriage customs
and weddings, marital adjustment and life crisis (deth, divorce, remarriage,
and blended families). Students will develop skills in understanding themselves
and in developing fulfilling intimate personal relationships. The focus of
the learning will be on problem solving and decision making. *This course
may be used for a social studies credit for graduation purposes only. Colleges
will not accept this as a social studies class.
Special Projects-----Elective-----1 credit
Prerequisite: "B" or better in a life science class and
teacher approval
An individualized project arranged between the student and teacher.
