Business Education
Both males and females are strongly encouraged to enroll in following Business education courses.
Microsoft Office 2007: The course is highly recommended for all students to complete as a basic foundation for success in high school and the world of work. Mircrosoft Word, Excel, Access and Power Point are used in every business setting and employers are looking to hire people with a background in Microsoft Office. Computers are a way of life today and in the future. If students are planning to continue on with education or to get a job right out of high school, this is a computer class for them. This class may count as college credit at area community college. Elective: 1 credit |
Advanced Microsoft Office 2007: This course is highly recommended for any student who is planning on a career in business as a continuation of Microsoft Office 2007. Elective: 1 credit |
Internet Applications: Love surfing the internet? Then why not create some of the information on the World Wide Web. In this class students will be responsible to create and maintain different pages on teh school's web site. Keeping the schools web sit up to date with current events and activities is the major purpose of this class. The class will also allow the students to create their own web site that they can maintain throughout the years spent at Atlantic High School and beyond. Elective: 1 credit |
Advance Internet Applications: A continuation of Internet Applications, this is a career based calss where students will develop skills of web site maintenance. Those students interested in a career in Web Page development should take this class. Keeping the school's web site up to date with current events and activities is the major purpose of this class. Web Design (CA) Grade level; 11-12: The course, taught at Atlantic High School, is taken for high school credit and Iowa Western Community College Credit. Web Design teaches students hwo to develop web pages. Basic design, construction, and maintenance of the web page are covered. Students learn how to set up a web page using current web page design software and tools. *This course is offered for college credit through Iowa Western Community College. Students taking it MUST register with IWCC and have qualifying test scores from the ACT, ASSET, or Compass Test. Any grade below a "C-" will result in teh student reimbursing AHS for tuition and books. Any grade below a "C-" will not transfer for university credit. Elective: 1 credit |
Personal Finance: Planning on having a checking account someday? Think saving money is important? Want to know how taxes are taken out your paycheck every month? Expect to own to a home someday? A yes answer to any of these questions, then this class is a must. Every student should take this class to get the skills needed to do everyday business transactions like balancing a checkbook, having a savings account, and keeping a budget. Elective: 1 credit |
Accounting: Accounting is designed to enable students to develop both personal and vocational skills for recording, analyzing, and interpreting business operations from a financial standpoint. Students will be able to keep records for a business as well as for their own personal use. This class is highly recommended for students planning to major in accounting, finance, or business administration in college. Iowa community colleges may accept this class for college credit through an articulation agreement. Elective: 2 credits |
Advanced Accounting: Advanced accounting is recommended for students who have completed Accounting and plan to major in accounting, business administration, or management at the post-secondary level or an entry-level accounting position in the business world. Computerized accounting concepts will be taught. Elective: 1 credit |
General Business: Planning on owning a car someday? Know what kind of insurance is needed to cover that car? Know the costs of having a credit card? These are some of the questions that will be answered in General Business. Students will learn the basics of insurance, business ownership, supply and demand, consumer credit, and managing a business. This is a highly recommended class for everyone to learn the basics of business. Elective: 1 credit |
Marketing: Marketing is one of the most visible business activities. This class brings real-world applications to apply marketing functions. Students will learn how businesses use marketing to increase their effectiveness and the profits they make. They will also improve their personal marketing skills. These skills are useful to consumers as they make better purchasing decisions. And they are the skills needed for many exciting and well-paying careers. Elective: 1 credit |
| Business Law: What is "the law"? The law cannot make people do things that are right, but it will punish them for doing things that are wrong. Business Law discusses how laws are made, changed,and interpreted. Both personal and business law are covered. If entering into a contract to buy a car, renting an apartment, or even getting a job, business law will help with these lifelong decisions. This is a class for everyone who plans on going into a business career after high school. *Many of the business classes may be accepted for credit in the business programs at area community colleges. Spreadsheet (CA): Spreadsheets provides the skills needed for solving business problems using Microsoft Excel software. Students prepare, format, enhance, and insert formulas in a spreadsheet as well as maintain and enhance workbooks, which includes moving data within and between workbooks, creating and customizing charts, and working with Web pages. Advanced formatting techniques are used to enhance worksheets, to work with templates and workbooks, including linking and sharing, using advanced functions, and working with lists. *This course is offered for college credit through Iowa Western Community College. Introduction to Computers (CA): Introduction to Computers consists of a hands-on introduction to microcomputer hardware, operating systems, and application software. Students enter, modify, and manipulate date with word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and database programs. Students should be familiar with the standard keyboard, This course is structured in five distinct and separate sections. They are as follows: 1) Windows XP (Operating System), Internet Explorer, and Computer Hardware, 2)Word Processing, 3)Spreadsheets, 4) Databases, and 5) Presentation software. Each section is treated as a separate unit for testing purposes. This course is designed primarily for beginners. No prior knowledge of computers is necessary. Students do not need to be expert typists, but familiarity with the computer keyboard is essential. *This course is offered for college credit through Iowa Western Community College. Multi-Occupations: Earn credit, gain work experience, and receive a paycheck. During spring of the junior year, students will apply through a written application and interview process. Students will be screened on the basis of the following: attitude, attendence, and career goals. Upon being selected, students will interview with prospective employers to determine a training station. Upon completion of the year program, 4 credits will be earned for the on-the-job training and 2 credits for this class. Elective: 6 credits |
