What is an NPR or National Percentile Rank?

A studentÕs (class average) national percentile rank is a score that tells the percent of students in the nation that got lower raw scores on the test that the student (class) did.  It shows the studentÕs (class average) relative position or rank in a group of students (class) who are at the same grade level and who were tested at the same time of year.  For example, if George or the class earned a national percentile rank of 72 (and NPR of 72) on a test, it means that the student or class scored higher than 72 percent of the students or classes in the nation.  It means also that 28 percent of the students or classes scored higher.  Percentile ranks range from 1 to 99.

What is an NGE or National Grade Equivalent?

A national grade equivalent is a number that describes a studentÕs or classÕs location on an achievement continuum.  The continuum is a number line that shows the lowest level of knowledge or will on one end (lowest numbers) and the highest level of development on the other end (highest numbers).  The NGE is a decimal number that describes performance in terms of grade level and months.  A NGE of 7.8 on a test is like a typical student or class at the end of the eighth month of seventh grade would likely get on that same test.
