MATH
Using Saxon math, the math curriculum includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division of whole numbers and decimals, data collection and interpretation,
measurement and geometry, and the wonderful world of fractions.
READING A wide
variety of materials are used in the five reading classrooms. The Houghton/Mifflin
textbook titled EXPLORE, thematic webs, and whole-class novels are
used to teach reading strategies and develop a life-long love of reading.
ENGLISH Schuler
5th graders will focus on writing strategies using Strategies for Writers, their new writing curriculum.
Writing projects will include narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive writing.
SCIENCE Who
doesn't love it? The earth, energy, human transport systems, and the solar
system make up the 5th grade science curriculum at Schuler. Hands on activities
and study trips are important to this curricular area.
SOCIAL
STUDIES Map
Skills, Native Americans, Colonization of America, Revolutionary War, Westward
Movement, Civil War, and Immigration are featured in 5th grade social studies
classes at Schuler.
TECHNOLOGY Using
the computer lab in the Schuler Media Center is a favorite activity for
5th graders. Equipped with a total of 50 iMacs the two labs allow two entire classes to search
the Internet, create a Power Point project, find Carmen SanDiego by solving
math problems, or design their own webpages using Dreamweaver.
