Accelerated Reader
The
Accelerated Reader program is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension.
Students select books on their reading level, read independently, with a buddy
or with a parent, and take an independent comprehension test on the computer.
Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading
level. Students get a percentage of these points based on how many of the test
questions they get right. One especially helpful feature of the program is that
it tracks each student's progress over the course of the school year.
Once every month, students are welcome to visit
the AR Store. With the points they have accumulated, students may purchase prizes.
Prizes range from those worth 5 points all the way to prizes worth 100 points!
Classroom teachers also encourage students to
participate in the AR program by sponsoring the AR Point Club. A Point Club
Assembly is held once per semester. Each student's total point accumulation
is rewarded with special prizes from pencils and gift certificates to reading
lights and posters. Points spent in the AR Store DO NOT affect Point Club totals.
It is our goal to make all books in the media center
collection, "AR Books". We aren't there yet, but we're close!
