THE INSIDE SCOOP
News from Mrs. Hunt's Fifth Grade Class

"Children are our most valuable resource."
Herbert Hoover

MEET MRS. HUNT
After spending her childhood in Mitchell, SD (home of the Corn Palace), Mrs. Hunt moved to Omaha, NE where she graduated from Westside High School (home of the Warriors). Following a family tradition, Mrs. Hunt headed east to the University of Northern Iowa, graduating in 1978. She took her first teaching job right here in Atlantic, met her husband at the second "Welcome the New Teachers Party," and has been active in education ever since. Mrs. Hunt and her husband, Nick, have two daughters, Elizabeth, who is married and attends grad school in New Hampshire, and Carolyn, a grad student at the University of Texas/Arlington.

SOCIAL STUDIES
How did the United States of America become the world power it is today? Can you name some of the movers and shakers who shaped this great country? What was life like before trains and telegraph communication? What changes have taken place since the 19th century? Students will be finding the answers to these and many other questions in our very up-to-date social studies book.

We will begin the year reviewing maps skills with help from Long John Silver; you know, that famous pirate in Robert Louis Stevenson'sTreasure Island.

We will end the year traveling the world using the "Around the World" sections of theTime For Kids magazine, books, and Internet resources.

MATH
Schuler students will be using Saxon Math again this year. This highly regarded math curriculum is a practical approach to learning math concepts, but it isn't easy. Are you up to the challenge?

Here's a great math fact activity to keep you in shape!

SPEED MATH

There are many great web sites for you to explore on the Internet which feature math puzzles and thinking activities.
One cool site can be
found by clicking below.

There are many games located at this site which use math strategies. Give each one a try!

SCIENCE
Thanks to the Atlantic Community School Foundation, K-8 students will enjoy new and up-to-date science text books and materials. Subject matter in Scott Foresman Science aligns with content standards and supports inquiry standards through directed, guided, and full inquiry activities. This year, 5th grade science will include Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Space and Technology. We won't be able to cover every chapter in the text book, but students will gain experience and confidence in their ability "to do" science.

LANGUAGE ARTS
In my opinion, the only way to learn to love reading is to do it a lot, which is exactly what the students will get do this year. There will be many opportunities for students to read books of their own choosing and convince others to read them too; students will also share class books and learn different strategies to better understand what they read.
To practice reading strategies, the students will be using a new program called Kidbiz 3000. This program can be used at home, which I would encourage.

Parts of speech, punctuation, capitalization, and more will be reviewed using Skills Tutor. Four different writing genres: narrative, expository, descriptive, and persuasive will be practiced using our Strategies for Writers textbook.
